meet Our Friendly Farmers & Purveyors

Our ingredients shine as brightly as our amazing team in the kitchen! To be honest, I am as proud of the ingredients in our cakes and other baked goods as I am of the finished products!
— Robin Davis, Founder, Maxie B's

This is truly why

our cakes & baked goods are so special …

It brings a smile and gives all of our family at Maxie B’s a warm and fuzzy feeling when we purchase from people we know! These folks are most often right here close to Greensboro … and sometimes a bit farther away. We are super-picky when it comes to our ingredients as well as who and where they come from, how they are made, and if animals are involved for eggs or dairy/cheese, how those animals are treated during their entire lifetime on the farm.

Connections, clarity of purpose, and the highest quality possible are at the core of who we are at the bakery. Sure, we could make things a lot simpler and lower our food costs by purchasing everything off of the food-service trucks ... but that’s just not how we do things here. We like to really know the backstory of our family of farmers and vendors and cherish the opportunity to feature the fruits of their labor in our bakery which you then get to share with your family, your loved ones, someone who needs a little pick-me-up, someone who is not able to take care of themselves and needs a little “easy” button with good quality food or dessert, or maybe YOU need that easy button! Whatever the reason, we are proud to bake our cakes, pies and crusts, biscuits, and quiches with AMAZING, pure, and mostly organic ingredients from people who benefit from our purchases directly and re-invest them into more good things to come!

We hope this brings you a greater sense of appreciation for who we are and why we do what we do … and that you enjoy eating our baked goods even more by knowing just a little bit more about them!

Ward’s Eggs | McLeansville, NC

“We're Lawrence and Patsy Ward, and we specialize in wholesome eggs from free-range chickens on our family-owned farm in McLeansville, North Carolina.  We like to say our pesticide-free, hormone-free eggs are laid by the happiest chickens in the Carolinas.

Our chickens are happy and content and produce beautiful brown eggs with a delicious and unique fresh homegrown taste.

They live in chicken houses that have been a part of our farm for four generations.  They have the opportunity to go outside at pleasure within a fenced area that protects them from predators.  Their feed is produced by using locally grown grains and is free from hormones and antibiotics.”

We’ve been using the Ward’s eggs for so many years now … and we can’t imagine baking without them! their farm is a family affair that we are so happy to be a part of!

Lindley mills | graham, nC

A North Carolina Flour Mill Since 1755

“There was a Lindley's Mill before there was a United States of America."

~ Joe Lindley, President, Lindley Mills, Inc.

“Our mill was established in 1755 by Thomas Lindley at its present location on Cane Creek in Graham, North Carolina.

The Lindley family owned the mill for approximately 100 years before it passed out of family hands. Two hundred and twenty years after its inception, direct descendants of Thomas Lindley began efforts to restore the mill and produce local flour again. For over 40 years, Lindley Mills has been milling organically grown grain and is operated by ninth and tenth-generation Lindleys today.

Lindley Mills' mission and passion is to provide the best organic flour to our customers just as our ancestors would have done more than two centuries ago. Our milling approach is a blend of tradition, technology, and cutting-edge innovation. This is what sets Lindley Mills' organic flours apart from the rest, and what continues to fuel our passion for producing some of the highest-quality organic flours in the United States.”

before partnering with Lindley mills, several members of our baking team visited the mill to meet their team and tour their operation. We were amazed at the level of science behind milling flour! They test every single batch of wheat that comes in and are able to mill to exact specifications to ensure their customers are able to bake more consistently by using their flour. We have found them to be an incredible resource for our bakers…and we LOve using organic flour! Their pastry flour, in particular, has been wonderful to use in our PIE CRUSTS!

Homeland creamery | julian, nc

Homeland Creamery is family owned and operated by the Bowmans.

This dairy is owned and operated by six and seventh generation farmers who have raised and milked dairy cows on the same homestead for nearly three quarters of a century.  In the earlier days, their grandfathers’ family started selling “barnyard milk” from a half-dozen dairy cows that were milked by hand.  Today, they partner with longtime friends from Wright Farms in Franklinville, NC to provide their customers with the same high quality, local milk.  The Wrights are 2nd and 3rd generation dairy farmers whose same farming practices and ethics are second to none.  “The cows are family too; we take pride in the care and management of the herd producing our milk!”

from whole milk to heavy cream, half and half, buttermilk, chocolate milk, and eggnog…we love their products! Oh…and ice cream too! Homeland features prominently across our menu…from baking to coffee drinks and in our pantry menu for your convenience too!

gallins family farm | mocksville, nc

Peter and Lyndsy Gallins operate Gallins Family Farm with the help of our families, many friends, and close neighbors.

Gallins Farm was started after Peter and Lyndsy moved to North Carolina from Wyoming in 2011.  In the March of 2011, two acres of land was leased from Greenbrook Farm located off Thomasville Road in Winston Salem.   This initial land lease and the rental of farm equipment from Greenbrook Farm was instrumental in allowing Gallins Farm to grow from an idea into a reality.  We are forever grateful for the entire Greenbrook Farm family

In March of 2012, the Gallins Family purchased a part of the old Reavis Dairy Farm.  The farm had not milked cows in over 12 years but much of the dairy infrastructure including milking barn, outbuildings and concrete remained intact.  Since moving to the farm in April of 2012, Gallins has strived to maintain and restore all the existing buildings and infrastructure.

Gallins Family Farm offers a clean, reliable solution for recycling food waste into compost, Carolina Dynamite.

well … we have a lot to say about these guys!

partnering with gallins has totally transformed our waste management stream at the bakery! while we were heavily into composting prior to connecting with Pete & Lyndsy gallins, the ability to have them pick up our compost and also be able to accept compostable paper products truly was life changing for us! we were able to take our entire stream in the cafe to waste-free and we have reduced our internal waste from the kitchen by 80%.

Our team has toured their farm and operation several times and we are so impressed with their drive, passion, and knowledge about the composting industry. they are so very careful about what goes into their trucks to haul back to the farm and they are committed to educating their customers about the importance of this strict standard.

It is our greatest wish that this service will be offered in the near future to residential customers as well as businesses. The positive impact that it would have on our environment both in the short and long term is phenomenal.

the family orchard | grassy creek, NC

The Family Orchard is a little slice of paradise located in a tiny little community up near the North Carolina / Virginia border. This farm is dear to us, as it is owned by the parents of one of our long-time team members. The passion they have for both growing fruits and making our organic jams shines bright! Be sure to order a jar of The Family Orchard’s organic jam (Blackberry, Raspberry, or Apple Butter) the next time you are shopping with us!

any of our baked goods that use jam are made using these organic jams! (Raspberry lady cake and cupcakes, malted honey and blackberry cupcakes, jam crumble bars to name a few!). the love pours out of every jar and we can imagine the fruit growing and the time spent in the kitchen making the jam and jarring it for us all to enjoy!

Take a journey with Cook’s here. The story of their vanilla is wonderful!

Cook’s Vanilla, the world’s finest vanilla - over 100 years of excellence. No Shortcuts: Our premium vanillas are made with painstaking attention to detail across all stages: proper cultivation, late harvest, artisanal sun curing, and a slow, cold extraction. Where we are today is much the same as 100 years ago. We continue to use the same careful sourcing and slow, cold percolation that our grandfather developed. To this day, we’ve found no better approach to making the highest quality vanilla.

We feel really strongly about using the highest quality extracts in our baked goods. We purchase organic almond, lemon, and orange extracts in addition to their amazing pure vanilla! possibility farm | summerfield, nc

Possibility Farm is tucked back in the woods in Summerfield and is a haven for all sorts of creatures including goats, donkeys, and guard cats! It is also the home of 300 blueberry bushes. These rabbiteye bushes were specially selected to succeed in the central Piedmont and include more than 10 varieties. Owners, Doug Canavello and Kathy Rooney say they like to watch the different varieties as they bloom and mature on their own schedules.

We sampled these berries last season and they were large, flavorful and simply wonderful! We are so excited to be the recipients of their first full season harvest this year.

we will celebrate the ringing in of 2021 with a batch of freshly baked blueberry pies from their farm as an annual tradition that leads us to think of the good things to come from the upcoming year!

Having attended many dinners at the farm over the last 20 years, it gives me a personal feeling of excitement to bring their cheese to our menu! As our recycling efforts and process continue to improve we are forecasting a 5% increase per year in the amount of packaging that we are able to recycle.

FORKLIFTS & Pallet Jacks – W.R. Vernon Produce has converted all of our warehouse lifting equipment to electric in an effort to minimize our carbon footprint.

New Construction – Beginning with our last addition we have started to use the latest insulation technology. Not only does it keep our cooler temperatures more constant, it allows us to run our cooling units less, which is a savings in the amount of electricity we consume.
